Six axles, in Pinellas?! |
Description: |
Previously any attempts to bring anything larger than an SD40-2 have failed, and even that one was iffy. Here we catch an SD50 and a CW44AC coming up the old ACL line from Largo. I asked the engineer when he passed how they got those two beasts in here through the extremely tight curves in Safety Harbor, and he said he wasn't sure, but he wasn't looking forward to going back through them! |

Can't hide Conrail |
Description: |
2478 may have a fresh new paint job, but the Conrail heritage shows through. Notice the water bottle on the plow...That should tell you how this guy had to c r a w l. That bottle sat on the pilot from the time I first caught this train all the way down at the Ulmerton Road crossing. |

AC4400 342 |
Description: |
I would think the 342 would have had an easier time negotiating Safety Harbor with those "steerable" trucks. |

South Clearwater Yard |
Description: |
Hard to believe this is all that's left of the old ACL's Clearwter Yard. Just on the other side of the crossing is where the old SAL crossed over on its way to Tampa. For a brief time in SCL days, a very small amount of TOFC service was provided here. |

Myrtle Avenue Crossing |
Description: |
The MOW creeps over the Myrtle Ave. crossing, frustrating more than a few tourists. A few seconds after I took this picture, an air hose burst on one of the old Conrail ballast cars, throwing the whole train in to emergency. The crew fixed it quickly, but not fast enough as some of the more impatient drivers began honking and swearing at the crew. The seemingly endless "building boom" is evident in the far background. Believe it or not, that building that's under construction sits on the site where my old church stood for 139 years. |

Laying ballast |
Description: |
The air hose fixed, the train slowly makes its way back to Tampa. Another short stop was made as this car ran out of ballast, and the radios were reset to use the next car. |
