The consist will travel about 100 yards further to stop at a red signal and wait for Amtrak's eastbound Cardinal to take the passing track. A few minutes later 735 restarted with 180 cars on the grade to head through the Blue Ridge Tunnel and points further west. |

From here the next 12.3 miles is a climb up the steep Blue Ridge grade to the Blue Ridge Tunnel. Even with 220+ empty coal cars, this train will be slowed to ~25mph by the time it hits the tunnel, down 1/2 the speed of when I photographed it. |
