Album Info:Carla and I made a trip to West Texas August 5-6, 2006 to shoot the PVS or the Peavine Special as some of the locals call it. The Pecos Valley Southern began in 1909 with 40 miles of track extending from Pecos to Toyahvale. Toyahvale is south of Balmorhea and should not be confused with Toyah, a few miles west of Pecos. Like many railroads builders of their era, the PVS founders dreamed of linking remote portions of our world together via their rails. Lubbock to the Rio Grande was the initial dream but Pecos to Toyahvale became the reality. The T&P operated the line for several years. Passenger service ended in the late 40s. Interstate 10 was built through the area in the 1970s and the track from I-10 south near Balmorhea to Toyahvale became an orphan. This resulted in the abandonment of the Saragosa to Toyahvale segment. Today the PV Railway is owned by Trans-Pecos Materials, Inc. which has a sand/gravel/aggregate plant near Hoban. The track is gated at the southern end of their property and for all practical purposes; the line is abandoned between Verhalen and Sargosa. Mesquites are growing between the rails as you leave the plant headed south. The line serves as a bridge between the Trans-Pecos Materials plant at Hoban and the UP mainline at Pecos and has very little other business left. PVS 7 and PVS 8 (GE 70 ton derelicts) are sitting in the Pecos yard heavily vandalized. They are a scrappers dream and a railfans nightmare. PVS 9 (SW900M) was sitting at the Hoban facility and appears to be in good shape. It began its career as Lehigh Valley 130 and later became CR 8657. In fact, it still has 8657 on its number board.
