Album Info:
Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the fall of 2019, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

A CN local bisects the intersection of N. Appleton St. and W. Packard St./W. North St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 23 Sep. '19. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be at least five tracks crossing N. Appleton St., only the main line remains. The C&NW freight house stood just out-of-frame to the right, a team track remained for quite a while after the building was removed. The C&NW's downtown passenger depot, one of three in Appleton, would be visible to the left of the lead locomotive if it still stood.

I'm not sure why the station sign stands here, the depot stood at Grant St., about 2,500' to the north. This portion of De Pere was originally West De Pere until 1890.

IC 9568
Description:
A CN local prepares to service the Ahlstrom-Munksjö NA Specialty Solutions, LLC, Thilmany Mill via former C&NW rails at Kaukauna, WI on 26 Oct. '19. The paper mill was founded as the American Pulp & Paper Co. in 1883. It became Thilmany Pulp & Paper Co. in 1889, after Oscar Thilmany bought out his partners. It became Expera Specialty Solutions on 26 Jun. 2013, after KPS Capital Partners, LP, acquired it and Wausau Specialty Papers. It was acquired by Finland’s Ahlstrom-Munksjö on 10 Oct. ’18. The former C&NW bridge spans the Fox River in the foreground, it was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. The mill's Rail King can be seen near the center of the photograph. Looking northeast from what was, until recently, Thilmany Rd. It appears that the remnants of Stribley Rd. and Thilmany Rd. will now just be referred to as the latter (at least there are not any street signs to indicate otherwise). Portions of both roads were altered or removed during the destruction of the majority of the original Thilmany complex and simultaneous restoration of the oldest part of that facility (the Eagle Paper & Flouring Mill) in 2013 (out-of-frame to the left).

CN 9515, et al.
Description:
A CN local passes behind the depot/yard office as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 10 Nov. '19. Usually they stay on the main line and pass in front of the depot/yard office while making their setout, but this isn't the first time I've watched them do it this way. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, CN 9515 and GTW 5812. There used to be a diamond in front of where the depot/yard office sits, about where the sidewalk leading to the front door crosses the tracks, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building behind the depot/yard office is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St., Appleton, WI. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

A heavily powered CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Nov. '19. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible at left. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose.

A CN local passes the Main St. overpass, passes Arrowhead Park, and traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 17 Nov. '19. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are partially visible at right. The stack of railroad ties rests atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

CN 2265 and CN 2321
Description:
A CN unit train of tank cars approaches N. Lake St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 17 Nov. '19. Train had four locomotives, CN 2265 and CN 2321 pulling as well as CN 2583 and CN 8883 pushing. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at left. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background at left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967- Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The W. Bell St. overpass can be seen in the distance to the right. A remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding, also in use by CN, runs parallel to the left.

A CN local crosses Towmen Rd., as it heads northeast with about 26 cars at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 28 Nov. '19. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and is transitioning from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

Description:
A CN container train parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads south past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Nov. '19. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. The Main St. overpass can be seen in the background.

Description:
A CN local momentarily fouls Racine St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 6 Dec. '19. The small white building in the background, at 403 Racine St., was the home of Dave's Burger Shanty for many years (from at least the ‘60s to the early ‘90s). Several short-lived restaurants have occupied it since, most recently Mr. Taco/Mrs. Fajitas and Foxxy Chicken. Since May ’18 it has been the base for some food truck.

CN 3002
Description:
A CN container train parallels Hwy. 41 as it heads southwest via former SOO rails at Snells, WI on 8 Dec. '19. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established on 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This once small, rural community included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any substantial remnants of the community remain, even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone (it is not a station on the current CN system map). Train had two locomotives, CN 3210 pulling and CN 3002 pushing. The through freight at left rests upon a remnant of the former C&NW main line, now relegated to a passing siding. I was trying to duplicate the view in an awesome photograph on this site which was recently chosen as an Editor's Pick, http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2749619. The contributor (very deserving of the red ribbon) has labeled the location as Minneapolis, but I agree with one of the commenters who believes that the photograph was captured at Neenah. I did not get the angle quite right, plus I will need to try again when the sun is in a better position.

Description:
A CN unit train of tank cars crosses the mouth of the Neenah Slough and parallels the pedestrian bridge which connects Arrowhead Park to Herb and Dolly Smith Park as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 8 Dec. '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 3179 pulling and CN 3168 pushing. The former Lieber Lumber facility is partially visible at right. Part of that facility is used as a warehouse by somebody, the office/retail building is currently home to the Valley Academy for the Arts, 139 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI.

A CN local services Amcor Flexibles Neenah (formerly Bemis until Jun. '19, formerly Curwood, Inc.), 1815 Marathon Ave., via former C&NW rails at Neenah, WI on 12 Dec. '19. The former SOO rails and Harrison St. can be seen in the foreground. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

Description:
A CN through freight parallels Harrison St. as it heads northeast past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 12 Dec. '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 5627 and CN 5755. A remnant of the former C&NW main line runs parallel to the left. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background at left. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished. The W. Bell St. overpass is partially visible in the background to the right.
