Santa Fe's last scheduled run to the Rio Grande
Title:  Santa Fe's last scheduled run to the Rio Grande
Description:  ATSF 1646 West, the last regularly scheduled train from San Angelo, Texas to Presidio, Texas crosses Alamito Creek. This huge trestle (1,206 feet long x 107 feet high) is located about 15 miles north of Presidio and, except for driving down the dry creekbed in a 4WD, in only accessible by rail. Two B23-7s powered this 20-car train, which had a reporter (John Walker) and a photographer (Cadel White) along to document the run. The train crossed the bridge and dropped us off, then backed back out for us to get photos. For two days, we had absolute run of the train, thanks to Trainmaster Roy Williams of Brownwood.

KCS eastbound train exits Mississippi River Bridge
Title:  KCS eastbound train exits Mississippi River Bridge
Description:  KCS eastbound train exits Mississippi River Bridge at Vicksburg, Miss. I recall driving over this bridge as recently as 1972. The new bridge (due south) was opened in 1973, but vehicles could drive over this bridge for a couple of years thereafter. It was a numbing experience to hear 18-wheeler scrape against each other ahead of you while an Illinois Central freight growled past on the track.

The trestle is about 75 yards north of the Tar River and is on the former East Carolina Railway trackage just west of downtown. It is used only when propane tank cars are shuttled to and from a gas dealer about a mile away, at the end of the line.
