CNJ Sandwich
Title:  CNJ Sandwich
Description:  A pair of ex-CNJ GP40Ps bookend a 3-car train that is currently without a cab car. This is one of four trains currently in operation like this on the Hoboken Division alone due to a backlog of cab cars OOS for PTC fitting and testing. This small train is eastbound out of the Meadowlands Sports Complex as part of a weekday mid-day outage on the Pascack Valley Line for a series of crossing replacement projects. During this outage the Sport Line is being used as a place to stage the mid-day turns without having to stack up trains on main tracks at Secaucus after making bus connections.

Rebuild Leader at Plank
Title:  Rebuild Leader at Plank
Description:  One of NJ Transit's 13 ex-CNJ GP40Ps leads Train #1630 east on the Pascack Valley Line. The locomotive is one of a handful of these thirteen 49-year old veterans to have been overhauled for non-revenue service. Thanks to a shortage of cab cars some of them have made a brief return to passenger service until more cabs are released from the PTC program.

Description:  One of NJ Transit's two AquaTrain sets is parked in Hoboken's Engine House this weekend to avoid freezing in the tank cars and the water lines that run between them. The AquaTrain is essentially a gigantic pressure washer mounted on a flat car that shoots highly pressurized water at the head of the rail to remove leaf oils in an effort to reduce wheel slip during the autumn months.

Kingsland Passengers
Title:  Kingsland Passengers
Description:  A morning that started sunny and somewhat warm quickly turned cloudy and chilly. Passengers waiting to escape the cold air watch as a 49-year old ex-CNJ GP40P leads their train into the station. The rail in the platform below are some of the remains of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western's Kingsland Wye. At one point these old buried rails routinely saw local freight trains and shop moves from the Kingsland Car Shops run across the platform. Trash trains to North Arlington in the '80s to the early '90s were the last regular run through traffic to polish these old strings of steel. Today the track is mostly forgotten except for occasional MoW equipment storage.

In the House
Title:  In the House
Description:  Late at night in Hoboken Terminal and the cool air is filled with the sounds of two 49-year old veterans rumbling away under the sheds of the Lackawanna Railroad's 110-year old waterfront terminal. These two locomotives are part of a fleet of 13 GP40Ps that were ordered for the Central Railroad of New Jersey and have been providing passenger service in the Garden State since October of 1968 under the banners of three different operators. The entire fleet has seen two major rebuilds over their long careers with some recently receiving their third.

This is the 4108's first day in passenger service since July 24th, 2014. It has since been "overhauled" and converted into a non-revenue locomotive. Today it is filling in as a cab car along with four of its sisters on other trains across the Hoboken Division. Passenger and Industrial
Title:  Passenger and Industrial
Description:  An eastbound Bergen County Line local to Hoboken arrives at Wesmont Station rounding the curve at Curtis Wright. The train is lead by one of 13 ex-CNJ GP40Ps (one of six sets like this on the Hoboken Division). The train passes through the industrial landscape of Wallington and Wood-Ridge. This area was at one point one of North Jersey's industrial strongholds with the massive Curtis Wright complex being one of the major manufacturing sites for the war effort during the second World War. Today much of these industrial properties have either been converted to warehouses or have been cleared to make way for retail and townhouses. The Farmland Dairy facility to the left of the scene was one of the more recent facilities to close its doors in December of 2013 resulting in the loss of over 300 North Jersey jobs. What the future holds in store for the vast property is uncertain but it wouldn't come as a surprise to learn of expanded retail and residential construction.

Off Goes the Santa Train
Title:  Off Goes the Santa Train
Description:  The annual "Railmen for Children" Santa Train departs Hoboken for Newark, The Oranges, Denville and Montclair with a trainload of children from schools all across the area. The children aboard this train are treated with gifts, music, food and a visit from Santa. The entire trip is made possible by the employee operated Railmen for Children charity and cooperation by NJ Transit who has been providing a train to the event every year since 1983. The equipment used and the people involved have changed over the years but one thing remains the same: The Santa Drumhead. This hand-painted drumhead has been affixed to the cab car of every Railmen for Children Santa Train since the very beginning and will continue to make its annual appearance for many years to come!

Generational Gap
Title:  Generational Gap
Description:  Two generations of equipment share time together in the depot. A battle-scarred GP40 with nearly 50 years running and millions of miles of both freight and passenger experience from Penn Central, Conrail and NJ Transit rumbles away on Track 3 with the new generation of equipment staring it down from a distance. For now these tired old soldiers continue to provide service but for how much longer? With every passing year the equipment on New Jersey's commuter lines becomes less and less diverse. These tired old geeps won't be around forever. Especially with a recent announcement that NJ Transit has ordered an additional 17 ALP45 dual-modes from Bombardier. It feels like just last week I was coming to work in Hoboken for an afternoon assignment to a house with a dozen or more of them rumbling away ready for their westbound journey to wherever.

Junk Salad
Title:  Junk Salad
Description:  One of NJ Transit's four GP40-2s rumbles under the skylit sheds at Newark Penn Station on Track A. The 49-year old work horse was added to the lead of Train #5416 at Raritan Yard after a mechanical failure rendered the cab car inoperable. The mixed trainset is an odd one these days as much more care has gone into keeping Comet Vs all together out of Hoboken with Comet IIM and Comet IV coaches being used primarily on the Newark division.
