Here are six photos of Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotives taken near the final days of the "Steam Age" on the PRR ~ that is, before 15 July 1959. Most of these photos were taken by Dr. Philip R. Hastings, and come from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (350-75-0785).

Miscellanea. Here is the first of two duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Philip R. Hastings that were taken in Watkins Glen, New York, on 4 August 1956. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4245, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during June of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in June of 1941, and retired in April of 1959 after 36 years of faithful service. The water-level gauge on the water tank looks pretty low to me! This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-28).

Miscellanea. Here is the second of two duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Philip R. Hastings that were taken in Watkins Glen, New York, on 4 August 1956. Partially visible here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4245, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during June of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in June of 1941, and retired in April of 1959 after 36 years of faithful service. In the middle distance, note the boat sailing on Seneca Lake. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-29).

Miscellanea. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on 2 December 1956. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6760, an M-1B (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in Juniata as an M-1A during July of 1930, rebuilt as an M-1B in May of 1948, and retired in September of 1959 after 29 years of faithful service. It's pulling a mixed-cargo freight train out of the Williamsport Yards. Note the "doghouse" on the coast-to-coast tender. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-1).

PRR 6779, M-1B, 1956

Miscellanea. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken near Leolyn, Pennsylvania, on 2 December 1956. Shown here )L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6779 and #6816. Both are Class "M" (4-8-2) "Mountain" locomotives. #6779 is an M-1B built by the Lima Locomotive Works as an M-1A during March of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B in December of 1948, and retired in September of 1959. #6816 is an M-1 built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during September of 1926 and retired in June of 1959. They're pushing a northbound coal train on a very cold day. Note the N-5 cabin car: it's lucky number 477777! This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-2).

Miscellanea. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slibe of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on 2 December 1956. Shown here (L to R) are four Pennsylvania Railroad engines poised for action: #4249, #42>3, #6734, and #1496. #4249 and #4293 are I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapods" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works: #4249 was constructed in June of 1923 and retired in August of 1957, while #429/ was built in July of 1923 and retired in October of 1959. #6734 is an M-1B (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an M-1A in June of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B in Augsst of 1948, and retired in September of 1959. #1496 is a B-6SB (0-6-0) switcher built in Juniata in January of 1916 and retired in December of 1957. All that smoke and steam means!it's really, really cold!
