UP 8799
Title:  UP 8799
Description:  UP 8799 popping out from behind a tree as long eastbound pusher on autorack duty... maybe... because most of the consist remains hidden behind the hills and across the unused lanes that were supposed to be eastbound, but due to budget cuts, Nebraska, like Wyoming, has chosen to close large stretches of interstate and tear them up under the orange "construction" signs (although for hundreds of miles, all we see is destruction and unused lanes while we proceed at times below 20mph (on the interstate) in one-lane traffic.

Bailey Yard East
Title:  Bailey Yard East
Description:  Glancing to the west to see "Bailey Yard East" - the west hump isnt even visible off to the left of the frame... nor the multiple tracks that spread off for a couple miles to the east (nearly directly behind the photographer) - shows the taller of the humps along with the diesel repair facility and the road maintenance/top-off (eastbound only!) facility (I believe the westbound maintenance/road-ready tracks are in the somewhat center of the frame an inch or two (in the picture) to the large tanks in the background (beige colored structures).

East (on the west side) Route Tower
Title:  East (on the west side) Route Tower
Description:  East (on the west side) Route Tower (?) - but mostly to get a peek at the long line of rent-a-rig red power units in the distance - and again, try to convey the massive size of this place. Right top of frame is the entrance loop up to the train over-pass tracks while the yellow lower left is the top of the near eastbound service area previously pictured, the east bowl and hump is to the right of the frame.

GMTX 2146 And UP 915816
Title:  GMTX 2146 And UP 915816
Description:  GMTX 2146 as the first of the blueberry bunch amongst the banana group... although I did ask the retired UP fellow about all the rent-a-unit Geeps, but he potentially didnt understand the question (or the follow up about why have a string of 4400hp units with a lonely little Geep or SD tossed behind them or in the mix... my question was if the horsepower was calculated that closely to stall or were they just being transported to another location up with the power or were they for dropping off at a local spur to handle it while the big road units re-attached to the consist remaining and finished off the run... it got a blank look on his face, so I presume it was either the worlds most stupid question and he was too polite to say so, or he didnt know either). As the continued side noted, UP 915816 concrete tie packing flat car.

Title:  GMTX 2695 - GMTX 2146
Description:  GMTX 2695 - GMTX 2146 in the middle of an extremely long string of power units, predominantly blue rent-a-horse; which was surprising to see so much blue and red-brown in the near tracks right at the Golden Spike Tower.

Golden Spike Tower
Title:  Golden Spike Tower
Description:  Golden Spike Tower, Union Pacific North Platte yard observation deck and religious site (for the railfan)... two hump yards, a massive maintenance and repair shop, and central processing area for thousands of railcars on any given day. (Before I forget to mention it, currently the UP Golden Spike Tower website has an active webcam that gives you a small amount of appreciation for the action as it roves about the yards below - its worth a glance, and it really is live - originally Id thought it was some sort of pre-recorded ad for the tower, but being down below seeing the feed thats going out, it does match the real world, so theyre not pulling your leg with the number of trains pulling through at any given minute).

Golden Spike Tower
Title:  Golden Spike Tower

Title:  IBCX 1061
Description:  IBCX 1061 - and further proof sometimes the road less traveled is the better route (especially when most of the interstate lanes are closed anyway) - this little unit warranted a quick braking and circle around... and yielded yet more surprises once we pulled off the road.

UP 1601
Title:  UP 1601
Description:  UP 1601 in tailing elephant position behind her bigger sister shuffling between the sort and departure yards... maybe (on the yard description... I took a picture of the Bailey Yard layout picture, but, honestly, I shouldve taken more care because the close color in the key... that or tried to understand all the activity - even though a very kind retire UP employee upstairs in the enclosed part of the tower took the time to point and talk through it all... honestly? Overwhelming is an understatement, especially trying to grasp the numbers that are pouring forth as he points (I mean, one of the two hump towers is so tall, its also a pass-under for a tunnel so units can pass from one side of the tower/sort yard to the other uninterrupted... which if you follow a group of power during a shuffle, you periodically lose them (I believe Bailey Yard is over 8 miles long, so I guess not hard to imagine losing them - but they go under, loop around, and eventually even over an rail-over-rail over-pass, then disappear again behind more railcars... it would take a long time to fully appreciate the immense scales were talking about.

UP 1647
Title:  UP 1647
Description:  UP 1647 last shot of this pair during the slow approach to the tower (speaking of which - be ready to spend time along this little road if possible, although theres not much shoulder, which means my best bet was actively agreeing when the better-half offered to drive us into the Tower area while I was hanging and drooling out the window (and snapping pictures along the way). I benefitted from it being a Saturday morning while there was very little activity on the paved road.)

Title:  UP 3977 4-6-6-4 Challenger (starboard)
Description:  UP 3977 4-6-6-4 Challenger (bagged and stuffed, but according to the sign, the only one of its class on display in the world). The folks that restored the unit did a great job and provided access to the cab along with the great choice not to surround this wonderful piece of history with fences or other items that wouldve detracted... of course, my only whine was how close everything was packed so getting far enough away with only a 24mm lens was a bit of a challenge.

UP 4280 - UP 1601
Title:  UP 4280 - UP 1601
Description:  UP 4280 - UP 1601 in a more zoomed out shot to try and put it all into perspective: the near lower right is the diesel repair shed spurs (units in the first row listed above... but theyre way the heck off to the right - not just 90°, but off around to the other side of the observation platform) - the little HCLX 3848 is the start of the several rows of rental power and smaller UP power units; I believe departure tracks are next, then thru-lines with the mixed freight visible, receiving tracks back behind the two power units followed by the *west* (bound) hump tower dropping down into the sort bowl out of the frame to the right; departure tracks; finally a whole pile of westbound run-thru tracks not even visible up and off to the distant left... to the best of my guesses - but - this is only a very small fragment of the entire 8 mile length as theres all the *east* (bound, but ot the left/west of the frame) hump tower, yards, maintenance, etc. disappearing into the distant farmland.
