Album Info:In 1980, the Rock Island was bankrupt and was liquidated. The C&NW purchased the CRI&P's Minneapolis-Kansas City mainline for $93 million allowing the C&NW to abandon most the former CGW route. The nickname "Spine Line" is because the route serves as a "backbone" to many secondary lines that run through Iowa. Between 1987 and 1989, I lived in Mason City and shot the "Spine Line" often. Thanks for visiting this album and I hope you enjoy the photos.

CNW 6929 & 6582
Title:  CNW 6929 & 6582
Description:  Meeting at Mason City. CNW 6582 was originally built as Burlington 522. The C&NW acquired several used SD45's in the mid 1980's from Conrail and BN and most were rebuilt at the ex CGW Oelwein shops. Included in the rebuild was the replacement of the 20 cylinder 645 engine with a 16 cylinder, Dash 2 electrical components and other upgrades.
