Goldstein | | Dates: | 12/14/2015 - 12/14/2015 | | Album Info: | Interestingly enough, the FM 977 grade crossing kept falsely activating every few moments after the lite engine move in the previous album. I figured with all the rain, something got wet, and was drying out in the sun, and I'd give it time to fix itself.
After about an hour, when I heard over the scanner that a southbound get its track warrant out of Donie to Flynn, I figured I better call, because people were driving around the intermittantly lowered gates.
I called the BNSF Gulf Division Houston Subdivision dispatcher direct (Yeah, I have it on speed dial on my cell phone just for this reason - and as it was not an emergency - YET). I told him the situation and crossing number and he thanked me and said signal department was going to be called.
I went outside, heard the dispatcher issue the advisory (Rule 6.32.2A?) to the train. About 5 minutes later, as the train crept around the curve north of Flynn, an unmarked white pick up pulled up to the crossing and blocked it.
The driver asked me what was going on, I told him. He replied that he worked for BNSF, and he pulled his truck across the lanes, blocking them. The train approached the crossing at a crawl, giving me good shots. The gates activated, and with the crossing protected, the engineer throttled up and after the the train cleared the circuit, the gates went back up, and the unmarked white truck left.
About 20 minutes later a marked BNSF Hi-Rail truck pulled up to the crossing shanty (or the road), and I repeated what was going on to the Signal Maintainer. He was very cordial, and thanked me very enthusiatically for keeping an eye out, and I left him to his work.
One good deed.
