CNJ & LV Head-on Crash |
Description: |
Two accounts of this crash appear online. One states "December 26, 1965 an eastbound CNJ 32-car train which incluaed two brand new Alco C420 LH&R units being delivered from the factory collided head-on with a westbound LV 155-car train at Laurel Run, Pa. This happened less than two months after a#joint use agreement between the CNJ and LV to share tracks between Jim Thorpe and Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The collision was attributed to a dispatcher error." C. CNJ & LY Head-on Crash |
Description: |
Another online source contradicts the first explanation of this crash. It states from a worker at the scene - -"Reportedly not a dispatcher error. Word at the scene (frcm RDG wreck crew & engineering staff that I that I later worked with) was CNJ crew fell asleep and ran the red signal on their single iron out onto the LV at CP-Laurel Run. RDI staff assisted at scene due to mutual agreement with CNJ. CNJ crew was extremely fortunate to have survived as lead LV C628 climbed onto the CNJ RS frame. First cut of cars io LV were loaded ingot cars. CNJ train was reportedly shoved rearward several hundred feet upon impact. (dtiley)" Note also the comment below posted by Roger Cox as to the Lehifh & Hudson River C420's. C. L. Andrews photo |
