FA on the rear |
Description: |
The usual pattern for trains having a power pack was to put the FA on the west end. This one is following that pattern as it brings up the rear of an Oyster Bay train making its stop at Roslyn. |

Rounding the bend |
Description: |
An eastbound Oyster Bay train comes around the curve at Nassau, the tower to the right of the last car, having left the Main Line after making its Mineola stop. It will make all stops to Oyster Bay, save for Mill Neck. An MP 15 and two cars was not uncommon for a train that will work most of the off peak mid day hours at that time. View is from a westbound trains FA power pack. |

Oyster Bay trains almost always got a diesel on the rear to supply hotel power to the train, either an FA power car, or one of the MP15s that could act as either a locomotive or power car. Here, MP 15 171 does the honors, seen rolling away from Mineola after clearing Nassau interlocking onto the branch. |

By the tower |
Description: |
Long Island had a number of towers still in service in the 80s. One of the busier ones was Nassau, just east of the Mineola station. It controlled a pair of crossovers west of the station, and the junction with the Oyster Bay Branch, as well as the interlocking at Locust Valley, where the branch goes to single track. At one time, it also controlled the switch to the line that went down toward Hempstead along Franklin Av in Garden City, which curved to the right of the building with the ivy at far right. That line was abandoned in the 1960s. We see a westbound Oyster Bay train coming off the branch behind power pack equipped MP 15 172. It will make its stop here, then run into Jamaica for NY and Brooklyn connections. |

Taking the curve |
Description: |
After leaving the Main Line, the Oyster Bay branch takes a sharp curve to head north, as this train is doing, about to cross first Willis Av then 2nd St. We see some Mineola landmarks in this shot: Nassau tower, behind the second car, which controls the junction as well as a set of crossovers west of the station; to the tower's left, the power house, now abandoned, for the electrification. |
