Album Info:The Dong Phraya Yen is a region of central Thailand comprised of low and very rugged, heavily forested limestone mountains. The SRT has a route crossing over these mountains, thier "Northeastern Main Line" which connects the central plain and capitol region of Bangkok with the City of Nakhon Ratchasima and the Isan region of Thailand. When the line was opened in 1900, it marked the first road of any kind in that part of Thailand, for that matter. The Dong Phraya Yen 'district' comprises about 34 miles of grades, straights and curves and is SRT's equivalent of the Allegheny's or our Sherman Hill, with trains often being cut in 2 or getting helpers for the mountain crossing. Kang Khoi Junction is on the western side of the mountains and has a big yard for cutting eastbounds and reassembling westbound trains as well as being a division point for 2 other lines diverging from here. Pak Chong is on the eastern side and the point for reassembleage of eastbound trains or dividing of westbounds. The line climbs from about 120ft. above sea level at Kang Khoi to 726ft. at Hin Lap in just under 12 miles, which is a grade of about 1%. In the 22 miles from Hin Lap to Pak Chong the grade eases up, finally topping out at just over 1,300 ft. west of Pak Chong near Bandai Ma station. There is then 5 miles of 1.2% downgrade into Pak Chong yard. The limestone basement rock of the region generates steady rail traffic from the giant cement quarrys found here, but outside of those areas the region is still rural, largely undisturbed and often stunningly beautiful. I have just barely 'scratched the surface' as to railfanning this area and hope to present more photos of this awesome corner of Thailand in the near future; along with...a sure supply of bug juice!!!

Pha Sadet Station
Title:  Pha Sadet Station
Description:  Pha Sadet Station on SRT's Northeastern Main, KP138.95 [86.8 mi. from Bangkok]. This is one of the most famed and prettiest Stations in Thailand, and located about halfway along the climb from Kang Khoi to Hin Lap deep in the Don Phraya Range. A standing memorial to HRH King Rama 9 adorns one side of the station.

SRT 4023W pass Pha Sadet memorial
Title:  SRT 4023W pass Pha Sadet memorial
Description:  Just 1/2 mile downhill of Pha Sadet station is this memorial at the end of the road and valley. There is a parking area and a short walk takes guests to this viewing patio, while another path crosses the tracks to the memorial on the opposite side. Just out of view to the left is a small shrine for those who wish to pay respects. We were alerted to this light return helper movement by a soft crossing chime which sounded about 45 seconds before anything showed, a great safety consideration and prepatory notice for Guests who linger here. I took the photo a bit prematurely in order to get the memorial in and not blocked out. This rock was left in place when the line was built through here in 1895 and may have been minimally cut to clear train sides. The then King and Queen of Siam [HRH's Rama 5] had a residence near here and inscribed thier names on the rock, thus turning it into a place of notability.

SRT 4023Pha Sadet memorial S2
Title:  SRT 4023Pha Sadet memorial S2
Description:  A 'best i can get shot', SRT GE UM12C 4023 drifts downhill into a virtual jungle after just having passed Pha Sadet rock. She is returning light to Kang Khoi after having assisted with a heavy eastbounder. The concrete post reads; 'Limit of Shunt' or, in plain US English; 'Yard Limit'! [The passing siding begins about 1/3 mile upline]

Meet at Pha Sadet
Title:  Meet at Pha Sadet
Description:  On a very warm and hazy Feb 12th I was fortunate to be able to once again visit Pha Sadet and catch an afternoon meet as seen in the following photos. Here, utilizing all the power of an SD24, AD24C SRT 4115 has her hands full getting the afternoon mixed into Pha Sadet's passing siding for a meet and breather. Telephoto enhances the gradient she was up against, we could hear her fighting her way uphill for several minutes before coming into view! {Great Show; 4115!}

Meet at Pha Sadet
Title:  Meet at Pha Sadet
Description:  With nothing immediately in the schedule after catching the afternoon meet, we took the short drive to road's end and parked at Pha Sadet rock. After only a few more minutes the approach chime sounded giving us time to set up for photography..soon, around the sharp curve comes this rare bird of the SRT, 1983 built Alstom 4306: it is one of only 9 examples in this order and number series. Likely they were replacements for fleet attruition. SRT would go on to a final order of 20 more AD24's in 1985. This battleworn ol' gal was likely doing helper service and coming home for the next job..

Hin Lap Yard
Title:  Hin Lap Yard
Description:  Overview of the sorting yard for cement cars at Hin Lap, 144.29km. [90.1 mi.] from Bangkok. The little station here has long been closed to passenger service and serves the SRT crews who work the cement trains here. We accessed the area from Pha Sadet on local roads, which in the last kilometer before Hin Lap shared a stretch of right of way with the quarry lead {To a railfan's thought, "This is getting good!" comes to mind..}". Manned guard shacks were at each end of the shared ROW, as it is we seem to have startled the guard on our end who seemed to not expect any traffic -he anxiously waved us through and within seconds of clearing the shared ROW and second guard a cut of cement hoppers came rolling past us! We were then shortly through the mountain Gap which forms Hin Lap's false summit to find this view here..

A Speeder, a Bobber, and a Cement Hopper..
Title:  A Speeder, a Bobber, and a Cement Hopper..
Description:  In front of Hin Lap station I found this priceless view of what could easily be a model setup in 1:1 scale! The little caboose is on the tail end of the train 4519 has now aired up and will shortly commence rolling..After getting the photo I then noticed a brakeman sitting just inside the door. While Hin Lap's speeder is at the ready cement hopper 444071 sits in the background.
