NKP #125 |
Description: |
Built in February 1930 by Pullman in Lot #6308 as a 36 seat coach-18 seat diner, 1 of 2 such cars (#125 and #126) built in that Lot. In 1940, both cars were rebuilt to a diner-club lounge configuration, with the coach section replaced by a 20 seat lounge (1 seat was at a writing desk), and the dining section was slightly moved from off-center (towards the kitchen) to almost dead-center; this allowed for the addition of 4 storage lockers, a crew locker, a conductor's desk and locker, and a refrigerator. Also, the vestibule at the former coach end was closed off, replaced by another locker and small restroom. In 1946-47, both cars were streamlined (#126 in '46, #125 in '47), and the number of dining seats was increased to 24, with the 3 2-seat tables on the kitchen passage side (seen in this photo) replaced by 3 4-seat tables. Following the 1964 NKP-N&W-WAB merger, these 2 cars were planned to be renumbered as N&W #1025 and #1026, which may or may not have been applied. The #125 was retired and sold in December 1965 to John W. "Jack" Ferris' Private Railroad Cars, Incorporated, which named it WABASH VALLEY. The #126 is listed as retired in January 1966, but not sold until 1973. It is possible, however unconfirmed at this time, that along with Pullman sleepers GLEN FEE and WOODLAND, that the Oregon, Pacific & Eastern RR acquired the WABASH VALLEY from Ferris. This would appear to be the case, as the #125, along with the 2 Pullmans, was later part of the collection of the Galveston RR Museum. EXIF: 2:52 PM, f/3.7 @ 1/320, ISO-100 |

SLRG #9180 COUNTRY CLUB |
Description: |
Built in 1929 by Pullman in Lot #6274 to Plan #3989A as 8S sleeper-buffet solarium lounge observation COUNTRY CLUB, 1 of 15 such cars built in that Lot. 10 of the 15 cars (including the COUNTRY CLUB) were built for the PRR, 3 cars were built for the Erie, and 2 cars were built for the Rock Island. In May 1940, the COUNTRY CLUB was renamed to ANTHRACITE CLUB. In December 1941 and January 1942, 6 of the PRR cars were changed to Plan #3989U, including the ANTHRACITE CLUB. At the 12/31/1948 Pullman divestiture, PRR acquired their 10 cars from this Lot (as #8620-#8629), the 3 cars built for the Erie were acquired by the B&O, and the 2 cars built for the CRI&P were acquired by the SP&S. In 1957-1958, PRR withdrew these 10 cars from revenue service, and 9 of the 10 were subsequently converted to MofW bunk cars; the ANTHRACITE CLUB as #492383. The car was later sold to private ownership as PAPX #492383, and was listed for sale on Ozark Mountain Railcar in circa 2009. It was subsequently acquired by Iowa Pacific as the COUNTRY CLUB. Besides the COUNTRY CLUB, there are 3 other PRR cars from this Lot which are known to be extant: #8629 UNIVERSITY CLUB is also owned by Iowa Pacific as SLRG #9170, #8627 TRAFFIC CLUB was formerly owned by George Hart and is currently stored in Jim Thorpe, PA, and #8628 UNION LEAGUE CLUB is owned by the Horseshoe Curve Chapter NRHS and located at the Railroader's Memorial Museum in Altoona. JESX #2 SYRACUSE |
Description: |
Built in 1929 by Pullman in Lot #6217 to Plan #3975C as the PALM LANE, a 3C-1DR sleeper-buffet lounge solarium observation, 1 of 8 such cars built in that Lot. 4 of these cars were built for the DIXIE FLYER with DIXIE-series names and delivered in late December 1928. The other 4 cars were built for the SEMINOLE LIMITED with PALM-series names and delivered in January 1929. One car, the PALM CITY, was wrecked in January 1947 at Perham, MN, on the NP. At the 12/31/1948 divestiture, 6 of these cars were sold to the PRR in the #854x-series. The PALM LANE was retained by Pullman until sold in August 1956 to James E. Strates Shows as the #2 SYRACUSE (1st). Strates later retired the car, and it went to the Central New York Chapter NRHS. In January 2013, the Chapter leased the SYRACUSE to Iowa Pacific on a long-term basis, and in return, IP is leasing a D&RGW business car to the Chapter, which has been put on display in place of the SYRACUSE. |
