NP 1 "Minnetonka" |
Description: |
I love this engine. It is nice how it shares the name of a Minnesota lake--one which, incidentally, the Northern Pacific did not serve, but its sister road Great Northern did. Northern Pacific successor BNSF still technically owns this engine, but its management nixed an idea to move it to BNSF headquarters at Fort Worth, Texas, a decade ago. The Northern Pacific was born in Duluth, which makes the "Minnetonka"'s longtime home appropriate. |

Hello, hello again, Soo 2719! |

I first saw this lovely Pacific during "Steamfest in the Valley" at Osceola, Wisconsin, in 1998. Sadly, "real life" kept me from seeing her again until 2015. She is currently stored at the Lake Superior Museum, its new owner. Here's to her returning to steam sometime in the near future! The sunlight effect could not be helped, but it does add a dramatic flair to my reunion with the 2719. |

Steamin' Up 'Tonka |
Description: |
Milwaukee Road 261 steams up Minnetonka once more as she approaches Tower E-14 with the westbound fall color trip to Glencoe. By now the fans below me had split into two groups to watch her passing. |

On To Glencoe |
Description: |
Now in Eden Prairie, the 261's fall color run to Glencoe heads on down the old Milwaukee Road with the "Cedar Rapids" bringing up the markers. Apparently the TC&W diesel that would take the train back to town would be added at Glencoe. The Skytop obs and Super Dome call forth visions of when "The Olympian Hiawatha" once plied these rails. |

Her Fans Await |
Description: |
Four 261 fans wait down by the "Tower E-14" sign for the 261 to put in her appearance as she rolls west for Glencoe with the first 2016 fall colors trip. The Minneapolis & St. Louis once crossed the Milwaukee Road here, but now it is just a wide spot on the road, alas. (I remember when the crossing was still in place. Ah how it seemed to me like it would last forever.) |

Description: |
Here is a look at the builders and equipment trust plates that can be found on the front of the 261. I never photographed these until now. |
