The photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the spring of 2014, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I succeed in catching ELS and WSOR on their former MILW rails too.

CN local crosses Depot Rd. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Dale, WI on 11 May '14. Train was headed for Waupaca, I believe. The station sign marks the site of the former depot. The ballast in the foreground is a remnant of the siding that used to pass behind the depot as well as service the feed mill (behind me). Half of the siding has been removed, but half remains as a spur.

IC 3138 traverses the S-curve at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 12 May '14. The remnants of the platform and foundation of the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot are on the left. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

The bridge is difficult to see from this angle, but it is under the 4th and 5th locomotives.

CN local pulls five cars over Black Creek via former SOO bridge as it heads south at Black Creek, WI on 22 May '14. Local was headed back to Neenah after servicing Shawano. Some old bridge piers can be seen in the middle of the photograph. I have always wondered if they supported a railroad bridge or a roadway bridge, if I had to guess, I suspect the latter. Thank you Richard, for letting me know there was a train headed for Shawano.

A CN local approaches Hwy. O as it heads south via former SOO rails at Mackville Station, Town of Center, Outagamie Co., WI on 22 May ’14. Listed as Mackville Station on some old maps, distinguishing it from the community of Mackville which is 1-mile due east of here, it is listed as Mackville on some time tables. Some remnants of the depot’s foundation can be seen to the right of the base of the station sign. The station sign was stolen between 13 Jun. and 9 Jul. ’14, not long after I posted a photograph of it on this site. I presume it was stolen; I would think if the railroad had removed the sign they would have removed the posts as well. Both posts stood barren for quite a while. One of the posts still stands next to the track (as of Oct. ‘18), the other lies on the ground. Remnants of the former passing siding can be seen at right, it has been truncated at Hwy. O. What remains forms a spur which could be used to service Stainless Tubular Products (STP), partially visible to the right. It doesn’t appear to receive regular rail service at the moment. I do not know the history of the cool, old barn-like structure in the background, but it has a loading dock extending to the spur. Train was headed back to Neenah after working Shawano.

Description:
CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it extracts a string of boxcars from Clearwater Paper Corp. via former SOO rails at Town of Menasha, WI on 23 May ’14. Originally incorporated as Lakeside Paper Co. on 9 Nov. 1910, construction of the mill began in ’11, and paper production commenced on 12 Jun. ‘12. At some point they started to sell a large share of their book paper production to Sears, Roebuck & Co. for their catalogues. The mill was sold and re-incorporated as Lakeview Paper Co. on 9 Aug. ’20. Sears, Roebuck & Co. bought the facility ca. the mid- to late-‘20s. The mill was shut down on 1 Feb. ’29 after a boiler failure and Sears promptly sold it to the Canadian firm of Fraser Paper, Ltd. (which also produced book paper for Sears). Fraser did not hold it long, they sold it to Kimberly-Clark Corp. ca. Mar. ’29. Kimberly-Clark sold the facility to American Tissue Mills ca. Aug. ’96. The mill abruptly shut down on 6 Sep. ’01 due to American Tissue’s significant financial problems. The briefly idled mill was purchased by Cellu Tissue Corp. in ’02 and renamed Cellu Tissue Corp. - Neenah, commonly shortened to Cellu Tissue - Neenah. Cellu Tissue Corp. was acquired by Clearwater Paper Group in ’10. A map from 1955 shows 6 spurs to service this paper mill, now there are 2 and only this 1 appears to get regular use.

CN local crosses the Newberry Trail as it approaches the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal while heading westward through the Flats in Appleton, WI on 24 May ’14. Local was headed back to the yard at Appleton Junction after servicing Kimberly, Combined Locks, and eastern Appleton. You can see part of the train in the background as it descends the grade adjacent to the Newberry Trail.
