CN through freight slowly pulls out past a CN local on former SOO rails at N. Lake St. in Neenah, WI on 15 Feb. '14. Through freight was likely enroute from Stevens Point to Green Bay and had two locomotives, IC 3133 pulling and CN 9673 pushing. Local was likely bound for Appleton and points beyond. A couple of miles away at Stroebe, another local was waiting to return to the former SOO yard in Neenah.

Description:
CN local bisects the intersection of W. College Ave./Hwy. 125 and S. Memorial Dr./N. Richmond St./Hwy. 47 as it heads northeast over former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 15 Feb. '14. This is probably the busiest intersection, and consequently busiest grade crossing, in Appleton. The large brick building in background is Good Company restaurant, est. 1980. The building was formerly Marshall Brothers Wholesale Paper, a.k.a. Marshall Paper Co., est. 1893. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the opposite, north side, of the building.

CN local shoves a string of cars along former C&NW rails to service Warehouse Specialists, Inc. (the tan building partially visible on the left) and Imerys USA, Inc. (the blue, truncated, triangular shape partially visible behind the tree line, background left) in Combined Locks, WI on 18 Feb. '14 (Imerys is just across the border in Kimberly). The tracks are quite sinuous here; they run on the south bank of the Fox River. I didn't notice the Bald Eagle until I was reviewing the photos.

CN local passes L. C. Siding enroute to service Appleton Coated paper mill via former C&NW rails in Combined Locks, WI on 18 Feb. '14. I have long thought the station sign is wrong, but I haven’t found definitive proof yet. I presume that L. C. is short for Little Chute, which is on the opposite side of the river. Seems like the sign should be C. L. Siding, for Combined Locks. Does anyone have an old C&NW timetable handy?

Unbeknownst to me, a CN local was sneaking up, heading the opposite direction, along the former SOO rails parallel to, west of, this train.

It is difficult to tell from this angle, but the train was crossing over from the former SOO main to the former C&NW passing siding at Milepost 211. Train had pulled onto the SOO rails at Shawano Junction to allow a through freight to head southwest via the C&NW main. Normally the local could have waited on the C&NW passing siding, but a long string of cars had been spotted there for several days (that string of cars is visible curving to the left in the background). Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna.

GTW 4934
Description:
CN local prepares for the short trip back to the former SOO yard after spotting about 4 or 5 covered hoppers at Galloway Co. via former C&NW rails at Neenah, WI on 17 Mar. '14. These rails used to be the C&NW mainline through Neenah and Menasha, but now end just short of S. Commercial St. at Galloway Co. The facility was started in ‘27 at 601 S. Commercial St. as Neenah Milk Products; Galloway took it over in ‘55. The portion of the facility you see is relatively recent addition built over the original ROW after portions of the C&NW main line were torn up. The older parts of the factory are out of frame on the right.

CN local passes Kimberly-Clark Corp., Neenah Nonwovens Facility, as it makes the short trip back to the former SOO yard after servicing Galloway Co. via former C&NW rails at Neenah, WI on 17 Mar. '14. These rails are part of the remnants of the C&NW mainline through Neenah and Menasha. I’m not sure if this facility receives rail service or not. It definitely used to because has 3 indoor spurs at the southwest end of the building. These covered hoppers are stored on the remnants of a small staging yard C&NW used to service several customers on this end of town (the remnants of one of the turnouts can be seen in the foreground).

CSX 8619
Description:
CN through freight traverses the S-curve at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 Mar. '14. Train was headed from Stevens Point to Green Bay, so it was slowing to stop, halt for a few minutes, and then reverse direction to take the line to Green Bay. Train had two locomotives; CSX 8619 was pulling, and soon to be pushing. I did not see the locomotive that was pushing and about to become the lead unit after the train reversed direction. The pile of scrap visible to the left of the locomotive rests atop the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.
