BNSF hired Utah Railway for their local switching agent between Provo and Ogden. To accomplish this Utah Railway leased old ''Rent-A-Wrecks'' in the form of ex-Santa Fe, Burlington Northern, Mid-South and two former Illinois Central SD24's rebuilt to SD20's by Omni-Trax. |

This was to be the last hurrah for Rio Grande Tunnel Motors before final oblivion. |

Back in the early to mid 1990's well into the Southern Pacific era,It was still possible to catch pure sets of Rio Grande power on Southern Pacific trains,Especially on local trains between Provo and Salt Lake City. Here at Provo's Backman's Crossing,Southern Pacific's ROGJM (Roper Yard-Grand Junction,CO Manifest),rolls east. The track in the foreground is Union Pacific's original Provo-Salt Lake City Mainline,Torn out in 2008 to make way for U.T.A's front runner project. Part two of this train will feature Rio Grande 3140 and 3096. I scanned this one and my upcoming second shot from kodachrome slides. |

Rio Grande GP40-2 No.3096 along with Rio Grande GP30 No.3014 head towards Provo at the 820 North Grade Crossing with a train out of Geneva Steel,Consisting of rolled steel,tank cars and empty coal cars. Back in the early to mid 1990's it was still possible to find Rio Grande GP30's on the locals working between Provo and Salt Lake City. The duo will deliver it's train to the Rio Grande at Provo before heading back to Salt Lake City. |
