BN Lynden local behind 2091 |
Description: |
The BN took over the Milwaukee Road's Sumas to Lynden branch in 1980 with the rest of the line to Bellingham being abandoned. In its later days, the Milwaukee ran everything from GP9s and SD7s to U36Cs on this route. BN sufficed with whatever was assigned to Sumas as a switcher. Today it's GP38-2 2091, which has completed its morning duties at the border town and is on the old MILW rail as it heads for the Dutch-influenced village of Lynden. |

Over Washington: Mansfield |
Description: |
This is Mansfield, Washington; located in Douglas County, and, up to 1985, the end of a 61-mile branch from the main at the Columbia River. The line was famed for its light rail and late use of 40' boxcars to haul grain. This view looks to the northeast; the rails entered town from the southwest and ran along Railroad Stree past the two grain elevators to the south-oriented wye near the end of the tracks. The town's small airport was located close-by as well. |

Over Washington: Centerville |
Description: |
This is Centerville WA, population about 120, located in Klickitat County. It was milepost 35.3 on the BN (SP&S) Goldendale Branch. This view, looking to the southeast, shows the Klickitat Valley Grain Grower's elevator as well as the other trappings of a small town of this region- a few houses, a church and the school. This line was actually abandoned in 1992, two years before the picture was token, but it still shows the path the rails took through town. Goldendale, the end of the branch, is just over 6 miles to the east. |

Over Washington: Wishram |
Description: |
This is the BN (former SP&S) yard at Wishran WA, looking northeast from the Oregon side of the Columbia River. Historically the crew change point for the SP&S between Portland and Spokane, it was also the place where the Opegon Trunk crossed the Columbia River and headed south. The BN bridge leading to the OT dominates the view to the west; while the UP runs along the river's southern bank. |

BN and bi-planes, part 2 |
Description: |
Train 643 out of Sumas has run long enough to require a dogcatch crew- it's shown here running south of Mt Vernon by the cropduster strip with its Grumman AgCats, which the conductor seems to be admiring (and who can blame him?). GP38-2 2094 leads |
