I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I recently discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously. |

An interesting, and unusual, CN local (returning from Waupaca) slows to halt short of N. Lake St. while headed southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 16 Nov. '18. I have a strong interest in railroad operations, but I am, admittedly, not well-versed in the specifics of their methods. This is one of those incidents which I find interesting, but it leaves me scratching my head. A crewmember, holding a fusee, is preparing to dismount to flag the crossing, even though the signals, bell, and gates were functioning. |

After finishing up here, the local will continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. A few blocks away, another local waits to enter the yard after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. Silly me, I thought that current law prohibits any of us from attempting to “drive any vehicle through, around, or under any crossing gate or barrier at a railroad crossing while such gate or barrier is closed or is being opened or closed.” Evidently, this truck driver feels that the law does not apply to him. The near side gate is just out-of-frame to the right; you need to zoom in to see the far side gate partially visible between the locomotive and the truck. |

A CN local crosses N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via gormer SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 18 May '19. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is partially visible at right. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 aI Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company#was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1. |

The local, preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna, is approaching the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. In the background, GTW 6226 prepares to transition from the east leg of the wye to the north leg of the wye. The white building partially visible between the locomotives is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) stood to the left, at what is now Arrowhead Park, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill dominated the skyline in the background for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, (out of frame to left), and an Ascension clinic (formerly Affinity clinic) at 101 Main St. occupy most of the site of the old paper mill. Neenah's newest, modern eyesore, the Gateway office building (also obviously used by Plexus), looms in the background. After razing some more cool, old buildings, construction commenced on 4 May '16 and was completed about a year later. There is no room for historic buildings and classic architecture in Future Neenah. |
