The CN train crossing over from the Shawano sub onto the Fox River sub has made it onto the siding and must continue until the rear is clear of the turnout from the Shawano sub. Once clear of this cross over, the train will shove back to pick up a cut of woodchip and pulpwood cars. As cold as the weather was, this move took a while to complete. I hope the crewman on the ground was able to stay warm. |

The Rogers' home made history on 30 Sep. 1882 when it became the first private residence to be supplied with electricity from the country's first hydroelectric central power station using the Edison system. For nearly a century this train would have been hidden behind the historic Pierce Manufacturing plant that occupied this city block from 1917 until it was razed ca. 2010-12. |

A CN local approaches the former C&NW swing bridge over the Fox River Navigation Canal at Lock No. 3 (out of frame to right) as it hauls 37 cars westward vhrough 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 4 Aug. '14. Train had just descended the grade from Telulah Park on its way back to the yard at Appleton Junction after servicing Kimberly and Combined Locks. This view was captured from the abandoned former C&NW fixed bridge over the Fox River. The active line was originally laid by the MLS&W. I used to think that the abandoned bridge was former MILW, but I have since learned that it was C&NW. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Alats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.' |
