CN 9513 and CN 7027 |
Description: |
A CN local crosses Military Rd./Hwy. M and passes Sherwood Elevator as it heads east via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Sherwood, WI on 4 Sep. '16. Sherwood Elevator has been owned, operated, and expanded by the Kress family since they purchased it in 1951. Their grain terminal, out of frame to the left, has a capacity of 1 million bushels. Unfortunately the elevator has not received rail service for quite a while. Train was headed for Manitowoc and had two locomotives, CN 9513 and CN 7027. |

CN 7027 |
Description: |
CN lncal parallels Union St. as it heads south into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 18 Dec. '16. The guardrail at left marks the location of the former Sherqy St. grade crossing. The WC (later SOO) depot was built on the north side of Sherry!St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the wesu end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The building behind the train is what remains of the Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility at 434 Sherry St., Neenah, WI. It was built in 1902 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The original 2-story brick building was constructed by Nicholas Simon in 1892, a 3rd story was added later. It was home to his N. Simon & Co., a cheese maker as well as wholesaler of butter, cheese and eggs, until he moved his company to Appleton, WI, ca. 1900. He was well-known both for the quality of his cheese as well as for making several gigantic cheeses. His largest weighed 12,361 lbs., was 8’ in diameter and 5’ thick, which he created on 15 Aug. ’11 at Appleton, WI, to be exhibited at the National Dairy Show held in Chicago later that year. By the 1950s this facility was home to the L. D. Schreiber & Co. refrigerated warehouse. A 2-story section at the rear of the building was demolished at some point. |

CN 7027 and a thieving trespasser |
Description: |
A CN local passes a trespasser and approaches Stroebe Rd. as it heads southwest via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 29 Apr. '18. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). A few moments earlier, this trespassing thief and her male companion were walking on those tracks, stealing railroad scrap metal. While I was standing near the former SOO rails, in the foreground, waiting to photograph the approaching train, I watched each of them make at least two trips to their car to dump their backpacks full of scrap metal in their trunk. As I was capturing this photograph, the male was standing next to me. He came walking up to me because they were wondering what I was doing. The conversation started something like this. Numb-nuts, “What are you doing?” Me, “I’m standing on the side of a public road, minding my own business. What are you doing?” Mine was an angry, sarcastic, and rhetorical question, anyone could see that they were trespassing and stealing. Numb-nuts, “Me and my girlfriend thought you were acting suspiciously, so we were wondering what you’re up to.” Numb-nuts yammered nonsensically for a minute or two while I attempted to ignore him, hoping he would wander away. At some point Numb-nuts says, “You aren’t going to commit suicide, are you?” I replied, “No. It would be impossible to throw myself under a train here. There won’t be a train coming through on these tracks [the SOO tracks] anytime soon. However, there is a train approaching on those tracks you’ve been walking on [the C&NW tracks]. Oh, and there it is, right behind your girlfriend.” She had noticed it approaching and wisely moved off of the tracks. Numb-nuts continued to mumble gibberish for a few more moments. I continued to ignore him and continued photographing the train. Eventually he wandered off and they both drove away. |

A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 8 Jun. '19. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., can be seen above the second locomotive. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church. Several of Neenah's hideous, modern eyesores, posing as architecture, pollute the majority of the skyline. |
